Adopt-a-Village in Guatemala is a grassroots non-profit working since 1990 in remote Mayan villages in the country’s mountainous northwest region. Chronic child malnutrition is epidemic in this area, which has one of the worst poverty levels in the country. Few children have more than corn tortillas and a ration of beans to get them through the day. Medical facilities are not available. Schooling is sporadic.
Our organization partners with village leaders to empower the Maya through two major initiatives: educating youth through middle and high school education, and improving nutritional health by teaching sustainable gardening.
The hub of activities, the Mayan Center for Education and Development, is situated on 200 acres of rainforest. The Center includes a high school, a Nutrition Center, organic gardens and green houses, and staff and student housing. Sponsored scholarships enable impoverished indigenous youth to complete a rigorous education. Graduates earn diplomas in academics, computer science, and sustainable agriculture.
The Nutrition Center uses hands-on lessons in growing food and preparing nutritious meals to on-campus students and visiting villagers to attend classes in learning these skills.
Other important efforts include our Child Sponsorship Program, which offers village children a path to education through our Reading Program and distribution of school supplies. The Widows and Orphans Program provides emergency food and clothing, and in some cases, housing, for single mothers and their children.
Together with our funders and volunteers, AAV is creating pathways to a brighter future for the Maya.
