Empowering Mayan Youth Toward a New Future
Adopt-a-Village in Guatemala is a small, grassroots non-profit that works with remote villages in the rugged northwestern Huehuetenango region. This area is one of five in Guatemala that contains the worst levels of poverty. Few public services or other forms of assistance exist. AAV partners with leaders of these Mayan villages to build a more promising future for their children by providing education to Mayan youth and training to families in sustainable gardening to combat one of the world’s highest levels of chronic child malnutrition.

The Mayan Center for Education and Development offers educational opportunities for impoverished indigenous youth. A quality academic curriculum has been combined with a focus on sustainable agriculture, in which all students participate. The Center is the first and only agro-forestry training school equipped with an organic demonstration garden and Nutrition Center in the department of Huehuetengo. Gardening classes are available to both resident students and visiting adults from outlying communities. This unique training in sustainable organic vegetable growing is bringing food, nutrition, and hope to Mayan families.
