Education
What We
Have Done
Adopt-a-Village has expanded educational horizons over the
past 15 years in some 20 villages. Nine primary schools have
been constructed, with all schools furnished and supplied
with textbooks and school materials.
Thirteen primary and middle schools have been provided with
libraries. Manual typewriters have been donated (as there is
no electricity in the region for more modern equipment) to
four middle schools serving area students from 20 villages.
What We Are Doing Today
Mayan Center for Education and Development
The
Mayan Center, a one-of-a-kind training facility, is designed
to provide education for local youth so they may put into
practice positive and long-term changes that will benefit
their villages with essential services. The school’s
philosophy of “service to community” will underscore their
studies to ensure that students will be well equipped to
become the future leaders in the region.
The first phase of this visionary center has commenced with
practice in professional and vocational subjects, taught by
local and international educators and experts. Students who
have completed the courses have received official diplomas
from the Ministry of Education.
Scholarship Program
Scholarships will be earned by students who demonstrate
leadership potential and high academic ability.
Once scholarship funding has been secured, the second phase
of education will offer full-time residence. Mayan history
and culture, linguistics, governmental affairs regional
environmental issues, vocational subjects, animal husbandry,
and agriculture, will be taught.
As a scholarship condition, students will serve their
communities through an internship program after completing
their three years at the Center. The purpose of the
internship is to ensure that an entire village can benefit
as well as the student from the education provided. The
ultimate goal is that the training will be used in their
communities to create improvements in education, health, and
food production.

How to Help
Additional Current Needs to Complete The Center
Funds are needed to furnish a library with textbooks and
reference books, supply a rainwater water collection system
and solar power system, and build a school kitchen and
teachers’ quarters.
Books
Across Borders
Thousands of Mayan children who live, work, and play in the
remote northern mountains of Guatemala have never known the
joy of reading. Students in this region learn as did those
centuries ago in now-developed countries with teachers
laboriously writing out long lessons that the students
tediously copy into their notebooks. Textbooks are not
available. Reading books do not exist. Learning is a
struggle.
Adopt-a-Village offers an opportunity to share our love of
books with the Mayan children – to bring the same joy into
their lives that we have experienced.
Our Books Across Borders program will light up the lives of
Mayan children by bringing much needed books to the
Guatemalan children we care about.
