News briefs for January 4
ADA/CASCADE: Girl Scout Troop 2737 is putting some of the
lessons learned at Ada Vista Elementary School's Spanish
Immersion program into action. The troop is sponsoring an
8-year-old Guatemalan girl through Adopt-a-Village, an
international aid agency that provides food and medical care
to poor families. Last year, the 17-member troop earned
about $800 through cookie sales. Troop leader Melinda Winks
said the girls voted to commit this year's sales, which
begin this month, to sponsor a girl named Lubia whose family
works on a coffee farm. The troop plans to contribute funds
beyond the $220 annual dues, which provide food for Lubia to
pay for medical and dental care as well as books and other
materials for a school in Quetzali in northern Guatemala.
