Health
Conditions
In this remote mountainous region of Guatemala, health care
is not available to the Mayan people. There are no
hospitals, clinics, doctors, or nurses. Health care is
simply not available. Women have little or no aid in
childbirth and mother and baby frequently die during
birthing. Even preventable childhood diseases bring death.
Tuberculosis is pervasive and often fatal.
How We Have
Been Helping
Since the inception of Adopt-a-Village, the organization has
constructed clean water systems, built family latrines,
provided health training to village medical aides, and
brought doctors, dentists and medicine to impoverished
villages.
Children at
Risk
The “Children at Risk” program is another initiative by
Adopt-a-Village to improve health conditions of Mayan
children. Intestinal worm infection is epidemic in the
villages. This debilitating infection robs children of
appetite and nutrition, lowers their ability to fight
disease, and impairs their immune systems. Ultimately, the
disease kills. The local public health department lists
parasitic infection and its consequences as the leading
cause of death of children between the ages of two and five.
Emergency
Medical Fund
This fund provides for children and parents who become
gravely ill. Donations enable our organization to transport
patients to medical help, fund the treatment of
life-threatening illnesses and injuries from accidents
through needed operations, and help pay for necessary
medicines.
You can support these much-needed programs.
